10 Records Set, Broken and In Target for Kaizer Chiefs This Season

We’ve dug through the numbers to find 10 stats that symbolise the up and down season Kaizer Chiefs have had.

Kaizer Chiefs DSTV Prem

Kaizer Chiefs’ 2020/21 season has been a mixed bag. The club that so narrowly came to winning the league last season has reached some unprecedented highs and also some unprecedented lows in this campaign. While the lows usually make for headlines, it’s important to give credit where it is due for some of their achievements, no matter how small they may seem. We’ve dug through the numbers to find 10 stats that symbolise the up and down season they have had, divided into the good, the bad and what could be the ugly.

Let’s start with the good…

The Good…

1 – This season, Kaizer Chiefs reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.

12 – Chiefs are the only side that has managed to beat Sundowns in the league this season. In doing so, they equalled the record for most wins by a team against PSL defending champions (12 – joint with Wits, Ajax and Sundowns).

15 – Should Sundowns go on to win the title (they need one win in their last four games), Chiefs would have beaten the side that goes on to win the title for the 15th time. No other side has more than 8 wins against the champions-elect.

The Bad…

30 – It took Chiefs 27 games to reach 30 points – the longest it has taken Chiefs to collect 30 points from the start of a PSL season (previously 23 games in 2007/8).

0 – Chiefs will end the season without a league double over a single opponent for the first time in the PSL era.

33 – Chiefs have conceded 33 goals already in the league this season, setting a new club record in a single 30-game season. The club record for any PSL season is 35.

What Could Be the Ugly

9 – Chiefs are now on course to either equal (or break) the club record for the lowest number of wins in a PSL league season – the current record is nine wins in 2018/19. Chiefs have six wins with three to play.

39 – Chiefs are also on course to equal (or break) the club record for lowest points in a PSL season – the current record is 39 points in 2018/19. Chiefs are on 30 points with nine points to play for.

4 – Chiefs current goal difference is -4, with three games to play. They’ve never finished a PSL season with a negative goal difference (+4 their lowest in PSL history).

10 – Chiefs have lost nine league games this season & are one short of equaling their club record of 10 league losses in a single PSL season (06/07 & 08/09).
