Betting Preview

Unfortunately for the Mumbai Indians, they have found their form far too late but notwithstanding their dreadful start, they are now showing the cricketing world what might have been. Rohit and his men have recently beaten the top two teams in the league along with their most recent five-wicket success over the Chennai Super Kings.

It is easy to see where Mumbai have faltered this season. Their bowling attack has had no more than an ordinary campaign, but it is with the willow in hand where the wheels have seemingly fallen off. Captain and opening batter Rohit Shama’s worst-ever IPL season (218 runs ave-18.17) hasn’t helped their cause as they currently average just 8.06 rpo, the worst of all teams.

That Sunrisers are still in contention for the playoffs – after five straight losses following five straight wins – it’s purely down to their batting from Nos. 3 to 6. Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran have been the key players in those positions and Sunrisers average 35.5 per dismissal for those spots combined, the best among the teams in IPL 2022.

Kane Williamson’s run at the top of the order has been quite a forgettable one; his batting average of 18.9 this season is only better than Rohit Sharma’s 18.2 among captains. Moreover, his strike rate of 92.9 is the fifth-worst by any player to have batted in ten innings in an IPL season.

With Abhishek Sharma being the leading run-getter for Sunrisers this season, it is perhaps time for Williamson to move down the order with either Glenn Phillips, who can bat anywhere in the top five, or Tripathi to take his spot at the top in order to maximise the powerplay. After all, the Sunrisers have to win both their remaining matches in order to keep their hopes of a top-four finish alive.

Having had a season of two halves, Hyderabad’s latest poor run has seen their batters score the fewest runs of all teams (ave: 153.92) and their bowlers give away 172.17 runs per match with only the Delhi attack having conceded more. So there is plenty of work to do for the batting and bowling coaches as they go into what is now a ‘must win’ match.

Although Mumbai Indians are the side sitting at the bottom of the table at present, they come into this contest in a better state than that of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their bowling attack should be able to restrict an under-performing Hyderabad batting order and lead the five-time champions to victory.

Key Stat

Mumbai have conceded 94 sixes, while Sunrisers have conceded 92, which are the second and the third-most by a team this season. These two are in the bottom four in terms of hitting sixes.

The average first innings score at the Wankhede Stadium this season is 166.

Mumbai lead 3-2 in the H2H at neutral grounds.

Kane Williamson has an overall IPL average of 36.09 but this season that has dropped considerably to 18.81, with just one half-century across 12 innings.

Jasprit Bumrah’s match figures of 5/10 against the Knight Riders are his best ever from 118 matches and the best of all bowlers this season.

When batting first the Sunrisers average the highest score of all franchises this campaign with 195.

Players to Watch

Mumbai’s middle-order finisher Tim David has faced just 60 balls in seven IPL matches but has accrued 8×6 and 7×4 with a strike rate of 185.96 – the fourth-best of all batters. Meanwhile, Sunrisers’ speedster Umran Malik owns this season’s record for the fastest delivery (157kph) and has the third-best match figures of all bowlers with his 5/25 against the Delhi Capitals in match 50.
