With no Test this past weekend, attention turned to domestic rugby in the form of the Gallagher Premiership and the United Rugby Championship. Both leagues produced thrilling matches that had it all. Bet Central explores the standout points.
Boeta Chamberlain Masterclass
While Curwin Bosch was trying to find his way back to his best form, Sharks deployed Lionel Cronje’s experience as a stop-gap on loan during the Currie Cup. With Manie Libbok and Lionel Cronje now gone, someone else had to step as Bosch still isn’t at his best.
In steps Boeta Chamberlain who gave the Sharks more direction and steered them to victory courtesy of 3 drop goals against the Ospreys to break their United Rugby Championship duck, the 22-year-old finally showed why he is so highly-rated in Wales and maybe the long-term answer in that 10 jersey.
Bristol Bears Struggles Persist
Pat Lam, recently rewarded with a long-term contract, will be left bewildered by his side’s poor form at the start of the 2021/22 Premiership campaign. Bristol have won just one of the first four matches and are second from bottom on the table.
Part of the problem is the key players missing through like John Afoa, Semi Radradra, Luke Moharan etc. Despite this the Bears still have a lot of quality in their team like Kyle Sinckler, so that is no excuse, Lam simply has to find a way out of the abyss his team finds itself in.
Tyrone Green, a Bok Bolter?
The main catalyst in Harlequins’ sensational comeback victory in the Premierships semis last season against the Bears, Tyrone Green in tandem with Marcus Smith was once again one of the main contributors in the Quins upsetting the Bears.
Green is in form so imperious; you can’t rule out that he may the Springboks’ bolter when the squad for the End-Of-Year Tour is announced. He is making it harder and harder for the selectors to ignore his abilities.
The Bulls Lose As Much As They Gain In Wales
The Bulls had a tough start to life in the United Rugby Championship losing both their first two games to Irish opposition, but they had reason to smile after securing their first victory in Wales against the Cardiff Blues
The victory, however, came at a cost with the Bulls losing ace flyhalf Johan Goosen to what looks like a ligament injury that may be long-term. While the win came at the right time, the injury to the Bulls star could not be more ill-timed.
Juarno Augustus Could Follow A New Trend
In a Sunday afternoon clash, Wasps took on the Northampton Saints at the Ricoh Arena. In the Saints line-up was Juarno Augustus who had a very good game during his 55 minutes on the field prompting thoughts that he may come into the Bok setup sooner than later.
It is a trend that is starting to be prominent – young and raw South African forwards heading abroad and showing exceptional growth to the point that they can ascend to the Bok squad. It happened recently with Jasper Wiese and Juarno Augustus could be next if he continues to improve at the Saints.
