UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2018/19 – QUARTER FINAL 1ST LEG HIGHLIGHTS
Friday off work, a long Easter weekend to look forward to and European football every night of the week. What more can you ask for? If you’re a supporter of one of the eight teams left in the UEFA Champions League you will be asking, hoping, demanding that your team progresses through to the semi-finals. The rest of us will be just be hoping for high drama and quality football!
Before striking our bets for this week, let’s have a quick look back at the opening leg ties and remind ourselves of what went down. It’s always a good idea before striking your next batch of bets.
Tottenham’s favourite Son showed typical tenacity to take advantage of some slack defending by Fabian Delph and questionable keeping by Ederson to ram home the goal that gives Spurs a narrow advantage going to the Etihad. In their favour, they prevented City from scoring an away goal. Against them is that they have to travel to the Kings of England and face them on their own patch. It’s deliciously poised.
Early goals for Naby Keita and Firmino saw Liverpool coast to a comfortable victory in the first leg. They often say 2-0 up is the most dangerous score in football, but by preventing any away goals Jurgen Klopp’s men know that if they score then Porto will need 4 to go through. Nobody scores 4 against Liverpool in the year 1 AD – After (van) Dijk.
Billed as the showpiece of the quarter-finals, this one fizzled and spluttered without ever exciting. Barcelona getting the result they wanted and carrying an important advantage into the second leg. They won’t get too cocky though with PSG learning the lesson for them about United’s ability away in Europe.
When Cristiano Ronaldo stole in to score for Juventus with a trademark header, you’d have been forgiven for thinking that maybe that was that. But this Ajax team – the neutrals’ adopted favourites – hit back immediately in the second half to square the tie.
This could be the pick of the second leg matches!
