Cape Town City – Winner

Ruthless. Relentless. Remorseless.

Cape Town City are top of the Winners list this weekend following their 5-1 comeback win against Baroka. If you told Eric Tinkler his team would concede an early penalty and also concede a goal before half-time, but end up victorious, he would have laughed you off the park. The 5-1 win was surprising because of how it happened, not who made it happen. This year, no team has more wins and points than City (level with Baroka on 14), but it goes beyond that:

5+ – City have scored 5+ goals in a league game on three occasions since joining the top-flight in 2016/17, which is the joint-most in the PSL in that period (Sundowns also 3x).

Eric Tinkler – Winner

His team was praised above, but Tinkler must also get his flowers.

2 – This is only the second time a Tinkler-coached team scored 5+ goals in a game (also Pirates v Jomo Cosmos in March 2016).

Royal AM On The Road – Winner

John Maduka’s side have won more points on the road in four games of 2022 (8) than they managed in eight games last year (6 points). They are not scrapping these wins either:

10 – Royal AM have scored more goals away in the league than any other side in 2022 (10), at least two times more than the next best side (Sundowns, 5)

Mdantsane – Winner

The red card should not take the gloss on what was a good afternoon for one of the City’s best players. An eventful seven minutes saw him score City’s second and third goals, and also get a red card. Fortunately, City held out for the win.

17 & 18 – With that brace, Mduduzi Mdantsane scored his 17th & 18th goals for Cape Town City, overtaking Kermit Erasmus (17) as the club’s top scorer since they joined the top flight in 2016.

Seema’s Subs – Winner

The win helped Arrows leapfrog Supersport into the Top 8 positions, but credit must go to Lehlohonolo Seema, who seems to have a knack for impact subs.

8 – Arrows have scored eight goals from subs this season, more than any other side.

Kaizer Chiefs – Winner

22 – Chiefs have won more points away from home this season than any other (22).

There is a fight left in the old dog.

Punters Who Believe In Goals – Winner

A good weekend for the liberal punters who believe in goal markets – Overs and Both Teams to Score etc. Every single team that played scored over 0.5 goals, with three matches seeing Over 4.5 goals. Crikey.

Baroka – Loser

Last season, Baroka were the only side that was not awarded a penalty throughout the campaign. They have been awarded three penalties this season and missed each of them. When you’re fighting relegation, these are the opportunities to be taken, and Thobejane and co. may yet ruin those. That said, even after the disappointment of missing the spot-kick, they had enough wherewithal to go on and take the lead. It was for the first time this term that Baroka led an away game at half-time. At that point, they looked like a team on a mission.

The mission was compromised when Tshepo Mokhabi received a red card on the stroke of half-time and the same mission unraveled altogether in the second half.

3 – This was only the third time in PSL history that a team-leading at half-time went on to concede 5+ goals in the second half (also Hellenic v Dynamos (1-0 to 2-6 in 2002/3) and Pirates v Supersport (1-0 to 1-6 in 2016/17).

Supersport United – Loser

Another away game; another defeat. In their last 21 away games, Supersport have only won just two, drawing eleven and losing the other eight. Leading 2-1 at half-time, things seemed to be going well for them, but they threw it all away in the second half, thanks to a pair of red cards.

1 – Under Kaitano Tembo, Supersport have won just one of the six games they have played away to KZN opposition.

TS Galaxy – Loser

With Baroka losing and Swallows not playing, The Rockets had the perfect chance to sneak out of the relegation zone as they hosted Royal AM. Instead, they contrived to fail:t thing you want when involved in a relegation battle:

4 – This was the first time since they became a top-flight club that TS Galaxy conceded 4+ goals in a home game.

Punters Who Don’t Believe In Goals – Loser

A bad weekend for the conservative punters who don’t believe in goal markets – Overs and Both Teams to Score etc. Every single team that played scored over 0.5, with three matches seeing Over 4.5 goals. Crikey.
