A truncated week of football sees just , every week, we preview top-flight action by looking at the historic and present stats. Even for short game weeks, that is no different. So here goes…

Stellenbosch v SuperSport United

If Stellenbosch were unfortunate to lose against Kaizer Chiefs a week ago, then they were careless in dropping points against Arrows in the last game. Several chances were wasted before Arrows struck late to rescue a point. Their visitors have won just one of the last eight away to Cape opposition, and if that comes into play on Tuesday, Stellies will need to be more clinical to stay in touch with the top. The bookies make SuperSport (2.65/1) the favourites, but only just (Stellies are 2.90/1). These are teams with the joint-fewest clean sheets (both 2 alongside a few others), so there could be goals.

1 – Under Steve Barker, Stellies have won just once against SuperSport (D3 L2).

But that win was against Arrows. And at 3.75/1, some may deem that a worthy risk.

Golden Arrows v Orlando Pirates

You have to go as far back as March 2018 under Micho to see both teams score in this tie. Indeed, six of the eight subsequent games have been goalless, with one goal and just two in the others. Given Pirates’ scoring woes, that could continue. This will be Pirates’ 10th game away to KZN-based opposition since the pandemic, and they have won just two, drawing five and losing the other two. The big question is – will Pirates finally end their 2nd-half drought, or will they set a new PSL record?

11 – Pirates have not scored a second-half goal in any of their 11 matches this season, equalling the longest run of matches without a goal after the break by a team from the start of a PSL season (Santos 97/98 also 11).

Kaizer Chiefs v TS Galaxy

After throwing away their lead against Chippa, the TS Galaxy game now looks like a must-win game for Chiefs & Arthur Zwane. In fact, with an MTN8 semi-final second leg and the Soweto derby to follow, the need to win here will probably have been classified as a PRIORITY! Chiefs pummelled 17 shots at the Chippa goal on the weekend, but only found the net via a set-piece, with numerous chances wasted. They’ll need to be more efficient against a side that has kept the second most clean sheets in the division. If the history of this tie is anything to go by, not many goals should be expected.

1 – Only one goal has been scored in four league matches between the sides, with three of the four ties seeing Under 0.5 goals.

Mamelodi Sundowns v Marumo Gallants

The champions look at a very good price at 2.35 to lead at half-time and at full-time as they return from a breezy CAF weekend. They welcome Marumo Gallants who are at the joint bottom of the table, with just one league win all season (the fewest in the league). Gallants will be buoyed by home & away victories in CAF, but Sundowns will be at a different level to what they experienced on the continent. At 1.45/1, the log leaders are heavy favourites to take all three points. And it’s little wonder, with that home form.

6 – Sundowns have won each of their last six home games (all comps) by an aggregate score of 20-2.
