PSL Betting Tips with OptaJabu

The PSL returns to action this weekend with a full round of top-flight matches following the two week international break. Five matches on Saturday including Chiefs, Pirates and Supersport, and another three on Sunday, featuring Sundowns and Cape Town City. As usual, we dug through the numbers to bring you a betting guide.

With history and statistics behind the decision, OptaJabu and Bet Central have crafted a ready-made PSL Multiple at over 18.00 for you.

15:30 – Golden Arrows v Kaizer Chiefs (Saturday)

The international break can be seen as a blessing in disguise for struggling teams, giving them the time and space to regroup. Prior to the break, Chiefs were one of those struggling teams, with four points from three games. While that sound disastrous, it must be seen in context:

1 – Chiefs have won more than 5 points in their opening three games of a season only once since they last won the league in 2014/15 seasons (7 points in 2019/20).

While that may point to a team that generally starts slow, the main difference this season has been their bluntness in front of goal. They have scored just one goal (an own goal) in their opening three games, their lowest total at this stage of a season since 2009/10. In fact, only once in their last 16 league games have Chefs scored more than one goal (a 3-2 in over relegated Polokwane City).

That said, this is a fixture that Chiefs traditionally enjoy. Since 2013/14 (Bernard Parker scoring), they have found the net in 11 of 12 league games against Arrows, failing to score only once. Parker himself hasn’t scored since April 2019, but he has six career goals against Arrows in the league – only against AmaZulu (8) has he scored more.

92% – Chiefs have scored in 92% of games against Arrows since then, the highest proportion they enjoy against any current top-flight team (minimum 4 games).

Yet, this Arrows outfit will not be a walk in the park. They are the second highest scoring team so far this season (only Baroka have more goals), and are also one of six unbeaten league sides so far.

1 – Should Arrows avoid defeat here, it will be just the second time in the last 10 seasons that they have avoided defeat in any of their opening four games.

15:30 – Cape Town City v Bloem Celtic (Sunday)

Cape Town City host Bloem Celtic on Sunday looking to bounce back from a 2-0 home defeat to Sundowns in their last game. A first league defeat in home matches this year against the defending champions should not taint the picture of their overall home form. The Citizens still top the home table for 2020 and will be looking to bounce back immediately.

0 – No side has won more games (7) and more points at home (23) than Cape Town City in 2020 (joint-first with Supersport).

Celtic have reached two domestic Cup finals in three months, but their Cup form belies their league form, especially away from home. Since beating Stellenbosch in their first away game of the year, Celtic are the only current top-flight side winless away from home, losing five and drawing three of their eight games since then. They have also shipped 19 goals in their last ten away games, keeping one clean sheet in the process.

Indeed, only struggling Maritzburg (17) have conceded more goals away from home than Celtic (14) in 2020. On the other hand, no team has more clean sheets at home than Cape Town City this year (6, joint with Sundowns). Siwelele must relive their Cup form if they are to get anything from this game.

5 – Since joining the top-flight in 2016, Cape Town City have kept 5 clean sheets against Celtic, more than they have against any other top-flight side.

15:30 – Mamelodi Sundowns v Amazulu (Sunday)

AmaZulu visit table-toppers Sundowns on Sunday afternoon. Seven points from their opening three games is Sundowns’ best start to a league campaign since 2013/14. Indeed 2013/14 was the only season under Pitso Mosimane that they started this well (also seven points).

AmaZulu have also won just one match away from home this year (Drew 2 Lost 5). In that time, they have failed to score four times and only managed more than one goal on one occasion. On Sunday they face a steely Sundowns defence who have the most clean sheets in the league this year (12).

3 – Downs have kept 3 clean sheets in their opening three league games for only the 2nd time in their PSL history, and the first time since 2011/12.

While current form points to a Downs victory, AmaZulu have taken a liking to visiting Sundowns since their promotion in 2017. Chiefs (5) are the only side that have scored more goals at Sundowns since Usuthu were promoted, and that could give them some hope.

2 – AmaZulu have beaten Sundowns on two previous visits since their promotion in 2017. No side has beaten Downs in Pretoria on more occasions than them.
