In the world of MMA, the latest UFC event, UFC 322, takes place this weekend in New York City as Islam Makhachev takes on Jack Della Maddalena in a Welterweight title bout.

The Main Event at UFC 322 is the Welterweight title bout between Makhachev and Della Maddalena. This will be Makhachev's eighth Main Event UFC headline fight, while it will be just the second in Della Maddalena's UFC career to date.

WHO IS ISLAM MAKHACHEV?

Makhachev, hailing from Dagestan, is a former UFC Lightweight champion who vacated the belt in June 2025, and broke the record for the most consecutive UFC Lightweight title defenses (4) in his most recent fight against Renato Moicano in January.

He holds a hugely impressive record of 27 wins (5 KO) and a lone defeat from 28 career fights, and has not tasted defeat in over a decade now with 15-straight triumphs.

Makhachev is a Combat Sambo stylist, and wins most of his fights through his relentless grappling proficiency. Makhachev will now be looking to solidify himself in the UFC history books by winning the title in a higher division than he has competed at for most of his career thus far.

WHO IS JACK DELLA MADDALENA?

Della Maddalena, sometimes referred to as 'JDM', hails from Australia and is the current title holder in the UFC's Welterweight division, having won the title last time out with a Decision victory over previous title holder Belal Muhammad.

The Aussie is still a relative newcomer to the UFC having only had his first fight in the organisation in 2022, but has made a huge impact in that time with a streak of impressive performances, highlighted by him already having won four Performance of the Night awards at UFC events and two Fight of the Night awards.

Della Maddalena has a record of 18 wins (12 KO) and 2 defeats from 20 outings, and fights with razor-sharp counter striking and a strong Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grappling base.
